1. Install Ubuntu9.10
1. DEL to boot from CD
2. Disk configuration
Select replace entire system, and keep default settings.
3. Basic settings
Modify settings of username, password, computer’s name, location & time, language and keyboard. Keep default settings and Forward to install the operating system

The following settings are used in this installation:
    - User name:            
    - Password:           
    - PC name (hostname):   
   
2. Upgrade Ubuntu9.10 to Ubuntu10.04 LTS
1. Update software
Select System from the main panel. Select Administration and then select Update Manager. Follow the steps to update all software.
2. Upgrade system
After the updating process, press Upgrade to update to Ubuntu10.04 LTS.



 3.  Printer Configuration on Ubuntu10.4 LTS
1. Open Printer Configuration Tool
Select System from the main panel. Select Administration and then select Printing to open the Printer Configuration Tool.

2. Open Add a Printer wizard
In the Printer Configuration Tool, select New Printer to open New Printer wizard.

3. Connect to Printer
- For connection via network
In the New Printer wizard, choose Select Device, then select Network Printer, and select Find Network Printer in the left menu. Do the following setting:
- Host: 192.168.253.57 (IP address of the specific printer)
Press Find to search for the printer, then press Forward. Keep the default settings, and press Forward again. Printer’s display name may be change here. Press Apply in the end. The New Printer wizard will be closed and there will be a new Printer icon shown in the Printer Configuration Tool, with the name that you set.

- For direct connection
In the New Printer wizard, choose Select Device. The system will detect connected printer automatically. After the detection, it will show a list of connected printers. Choose the one you want to add, then press Forward. Keep the default settings, and press Forward again. Printer’s display name may be change here. Press Apply in the end. The New Printer wizard will be closed and there will be a new Printer icon shown in the Printer Configuration Tool, with the name that you set.

4. Modify settings to print in color
Press right button on the specific Printer icon. Select Properties, and then select Printer Option. Make the following modifications:
    - Printer Color as Gray:    Off
    - Color Option:        Manual
Then press Apply.

5. Modify other settings and Print test page
Press right button on the specific Printer icon. Select Properties, and then select Settings. Printer’s name may be changed here. Press Print Test Page to print a redefined test page using the specific printer.
   
6. Delete printer
In the Printer Configuration Tool, Press right button on the specific Printer icon. Select Delete. After that, this Printer icon will disappear from the Printer Configuration Tool.

Solution > 

Steps to implement TC - SC in English MS Office 2003:

  1. Install Simplified Chinese – Traditional Chinese feature from Chinese Office 2003 using installation CD; Or install Chinese Proofing feature from Office 2003 Chinese Interface.
  2. Enable support for Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese through Microsoft Office Language Settings.


    a)    In Microsoft Windows, point to Microsoft Office, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office 2003 Language Settings.
    b)    Click the Enabled Languages tab.
    c)    In the Available languages box, add the Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese to the list. 
           After this step, the Chinese translation should be enabled in Word, but not in PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook.
  3. Install language add-in


    a)    Download the ‘Office 2003 简繁转换加载宏’ from MS website:
    b)    Install this add-in
           After this step, the Chinese translation should be enabled in Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook.

New Task - Ubuntu: installation and printer configuration

Describe > 

To install Ubuntu to a spare PC and perform basic configuration work.

Procedure >

  1. Install Ubuntu 9.10
  2. Install OO
  3. Update all packages and kernel
  4. Install a printer nearby (find out how)

Change >

Install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS instead

Problem >
  • Broken GNOME panel
         Main panel of GNOME disappeared
  • Booting error message: 
error: no suitable node found
error: Unkown command 'Terminal'

Solution >
  1. Main panel of GNOME disappeared:
  •  To restart GNOME. Using commands:
killall gnome-panel
sudo apt-get install
gnome-panel
      Write a boot up script to enforce restarting GNOME panel every time of logging in
      > Result: Occasionally fail
  • To install Kubuntu instead
      > Result: Occasionally fail
